Winner of the May 1968 crisis, de Gaulle was nevertheless weakened. The authority of the state was shaken for several weeks. To strengthen his authority, the president decided to consult public opinion by holding a referendum on the Senate and the reform of the regions. On 10 April 1969, he declared: "On the response that the country will make to what I ask, it will obviously depend either the continuation of my mandate or my immediate departure".
On 27 April 1969, the no vote won. The following day he gave up his functions and left the power to the president of the Senate, Alain Poher.
